In 1978, after graduating first in his law school class, Hill began his career as an Assistant District Attorney in the Harris County District Attorney’s Office. He graduated from The National College of District Attorneys Career Prosecutor School in 1980. In 1982, Hill switched sides and became a private criminal Hill is licensed in several federal courts, including the Supreme Court of the United States. Hill is also licensed to practice in the State of New York.

Hill has been named by Texas Monthly and Texas Super Lawyer magazine as a Texas Super Lawyer. In 1994, a Houston Chronicle poll of Harris County judges and prosecutors named Hill one of the top criminal defense lawyers. Hill has been Board Certified in Criminal Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization since 1985. In addition to his private practice, Hill has severed as president of the Harris County Criminal Lawyers Association, as a director of the Texas Criminal Defense Lawyers Association, as a member of the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers. Hill also served as a member of the Harris County District Court’s Capital Murder Peer Review Committee. He is the past Panel Chair of a State Bar Grievance Committee serving the Houston region. Hill is a member of the Second Judicial Region of Texas Capital Murder Certification Committee. He also serves as a member of the Texas Board of Legal Specialization Advisory Committee.
